Training program to boost maritime manpower
A new training programme has been developed to boost the skill and manpower needs of Singapore’s maritime industry.
Called the Certificate of Competency, trainees will attend theory and practical lessons covering topics like boat handling and survival techniques. This 21-month programme aims to help them secure placement with potential employers.
Ships operating up to the "Special Limits" will ply near Singapore. Graduates of the CoC programme will thus be able to serve on board such ships - instead of going on long international voyages - and reduce the time spent apart from their families.
This initiative is offered by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, the National Trades Union Congress’ Employment and Employability Institute and the Singapore Workforce Development Agency.
These 3 agencies will together contribute over S$2.3 million to support the course fees and training allowances of trainees. The first intake of trainees will begin the programme in April 2011.
