Sembcorp Marine bags 3D printing licence for construction parts
This will reduce the firm’s waste and dependence on outside procurement.
Sembcorp Marine is now qualified to produce 3D prints of non-critical parts for its construction and repair projects, according to a press release.
The certification was awarded by quality assurance and risk management company DNV GL, which will allow Sembcorp to use more 3D-printed components in the future and reduce their dependence on external procurement.
According to CEO Wong Weng Sun, the technology will also reduce Sembcorp’s waste and enhance their sustainability, as well as expedite projects and allow the wider offshore and marine (O&M) sector to be self-sufficient.
He added that the company has been working with DNV, A*Star’s Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech), National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster (NAMIC), Nanyang Technological University, and 3D Metalforge to develop 3D printing for O&M applications.
