SMF, shipping firms tie up to improve maritime jobs’ attractiveness

The roles of technical superintendent and vessel operator will be redesigned first.

The Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) collaborated with international shipping companies Pacific Carriers Limited and Pacific International Lines to launch a job redesign project in the maritime industry to increase their attractiveness.

In a joint statement, they said the project will redesign the approach and methodology to the roles of a technical superintendent and a vessel operator as part of the pilot.

The project aims to show the feasibility and benefits of job redesign in the sector to raise their attractiveness amongst talents amidst a competitive market, and provide analysis and recommendations for future job redesign across more roles.

The findings from the pilot will be compiled into a Maritime Workforce Transformation Guidebook which will assist maritime companies who want to undergo a job redesign.

“The competition for talent is keen. If the maritime sector wants to continue to draw talent, we must be adaptive,” said SMF Executive Director Tan Beng Tee. “This job redesign looks at current work processes and potential changes that may evolve in the near future as the industry embraces digitalisation and sustainability.”

Professional services organisation Ernst & Young Advisory (EY) will advise on the pilot and will be supported by the sectoral manpower development efforts under the Sea Transport Industry Transformation map 2025 and the Sea Transport Industry Digital Plan.
