Rising fuel costs amongst top reasons for EV adoption

Silent rides and better acceleration are also top considerations of EV owners.

Rising fuel costs are amongst the top considerations of Singaporeans in adopting electric vehicles (EVs).

According to a study from YouGov, 28% of Singaporean EV owners considered lower running and fuel prices as a deciding factor in their vehicle choice. Environmental protection and lowering carbon emissions is the top factor, cited by 44% of EV owners.

Other considerations were silent rides (23%) and better acceleration (19%) that EVs provide compared to combustion engine vehicles.

When it comes to car manufacturers, 34% of EV owners picked Tesla as their choice, followed by BMW at 24%, Honda at 19%, and Mercedes-Benz at 16%.

Singapore’s Land Transport Authority previously laid out goals to cut carbon emissions by 2030, which include electrification of bus fleets and establishing EV infrastructure.

Aspects of the driving experience—EVs offering a more silent ride (23%) and better acceleration compared to combustion engine vehicles (19%)—are the next most-cited reasons.
