Rising fuel costs amongst top reasons for EV adoption

Rising fuel costs are amongst the top considerations of Singaporeans in adopting electric vehicles (EVs).
According to a study from YouGov, 28% of Singaporean EV owners considered lower running and fuel prices as a deciding factor in their vehicle choice. Environmental protection and lowering carbon emissions is the top factor, cited by 44% of EV owners.
Other considerations were silent rides (23%) and better acceleration (19%) that EVs provide compared to combustion engine vehicles.
When it comes to car manufacturers, 34% of EV owners picked Tesla as their choice, followed by BMW at 24%, Honda at 19%, and Mercedes-Benz at 16%.
Singapore’s Land Transport Authority previously laid out goals to cut carbon emissions by 2030, which include electrification of bus fleets and establishing EV infrastructure.
Aspects of the driving experience—EVs offering a more silent ride (23%) and better acceleration compared to combustion engine vehicles (19%)—are the next most-cited reasons.
