SATS, TUMCREATE to commercialise AI-powered air cargo system

The solution optimises cargo acceptance, palletisation, and automatic packing.

In-flight caterer SATS and public transportation research platform TUMCREATE are exploring commercialisation opportunities for the SPEEDCARGO, the world’s first artificial intelligence (AI)-powered robotic air cargo system, an announcement revealed.

SPEEDCARGO is an integrated solution comprising three products that will optimise cargo acceptance and cargo palletisation through intelligent Unit Load Device (ULD) planning, and automatic ULD packing.

A 99.99% accuracy rate has been reportedly achieved for CARGO EYE, which produces real-time digital fingerprint for incoming cargo using a 3D camera system for better pallet optimisation. Meanwhile, CARGO MIND and CARGO ARM are still in development.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) facilitated the industry collaboration and awarded $1.9m to TUMCREATE for the system’s prototype development in over two years. The project also received $4m from the National Research Foundation Singapore’s (NRF’s) Central Gap Fund.

Since October 2018, TUMCREATE and SATS have worked worked at the SATS’ Airfright Terminal during the prototype development phase and for ongoing trials.
