
Changi Airport passengers up 15 percent in September
Double digit growth in traffic to southeast and northeast Asia pushed Changi Airport’s passenger movements to increase by 15.3% to 30.8 million passengers compared to the same period last year.
In a statement, Changi Airport Group said the Changi Airport also registered an increase of 10.8% to 3.39 million passenger movements in September 2010.
Traffic to Southeast and Northeast Asia recorded double digit growth of 14.9% and 16.8% respectively. This was on the back of additional flights by carriers such as Cebu Pacific (to Manila), China Airlines (to Taipei and Surabaya) and China Eastern (to Kunming).
On the cargo front, traffic grew 7.3% to 151,055 tonnes in September 2010 compared to September 2009. For the first nine months of 2010, a total of 1.34 million tonnes of airfreight were handled, up 14.0%.
Aircraft movements increased 9.0% to 21,923 in September 2010, totalling 194,894 for January to September 2010. This is a 10.2% growth compared to the same period in 2009.
In September, Changi welcomed two new carriers. China’s Hainan Airlines connects Singapore to Hefei (a new city link) and Dalian, while Indonesian cargo carrier, Tri-MG Airlines, operates to Jakarta and Balikpapan. Changi currently serves 96 airlines operating more than 5,000 weekly scheduled flights, connecting Singapore to over 200 cities in 60 countries and territories.
