Daily Briefing: Singapore's aviation hub status left in limbo amidst COVID-19; Cruise passenger traffic down 52%

And marketing tech company AnyMind Group has acquired India’s POKKT Mobile Ads.

From Channel News Asia:

With an increasing number of countries enacting travel restrictions to curb the COVID-19 outbreak, Singapore is left “extremely vulnerable” due to its status as an aviation hub, say analysts.

This comes as Singaporeans were advised on 18 March to defer all travel abroad with immediate effect due to a heightened risk of importing COVID-19 cases into Singapore.

Such restrictions have impacted the airline industry, with numerous airlines suspending flights.

On 17 March, Singapore Airlines (SIA) said it would slash its capacity by 50%, attributing the move to increasing travel restrictions as a result of countries' spread of COVID-19.

Separately, Singapore-based Jetstar Asia announced it was grounding its entire fleet of 18 Airbus 320 aircraft, with all flights suspended for at least three weeks, from 23 March to 15 April.

Cruise passenger traffic in Singapore has fallen by 52% YoY since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak.

From 23 January to 9 March, the agency said Singapore handled a total of 65 cruise calls and 156,465 passengers.

On 4 February, the Diamond Princess cruise, carrying 3,700 passengers and crew, was quarantined at a Japanese port after a guest was tested positive for COVID-19.

As the number of imported cases swelled, Singapore authorities said on Mar 13 that the country would stop cruise visits with immediate effect.

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has pledged to give the industry more support over the plunging passenger traffic.
