Removing pre-departure tests to support aviation recovery: UOB KayHian

Air traffic data of Changi Airport exceeded the firm’s forecasts.

The government’s scrapping of the pre-departure test mandate for fully vaccinated inbound travellers in Singapore would further support sector recovery as air traffic data exceeded the expected number, according to a report from UOB Kay Hian.

It said the March 2022 air traffic data at Changi as well as operating data of Singapore Airlines (SIA) beat their predictions even before the impacts of the eased border measures.

At Changi airport, passenger volume rose 62.2% month-on-month (MoM) to 1,140,000 in March 2022, which stood 19.2% of the pre-COVID-19 or January 2020 level.

Flag carrier SIA saw its passenger load rise to 61.2% MoM on March, on the back of a 15.7% MoM increase in passenger capacity.

Further, UOB KayHian maintains its previous prediction that the aviation sector’s full recovery will be in 2025 as major markets in Northeast Asia, especially China, will lag behind the global reopening.
