SG warns against travel to Sri Lanka

Travellers were advised to purchase comprehensive travel insurance.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) advised Singaporeans to defer all non-essential travel to Sri Lanka amidst growing unrest in the country.

In an advisory, the MFA strongly encouraged those who will need to travel to Sri Lanka to purchase comprehensive travel insurance and familiarise themselves with its terms and coverage.

For Singaporeans who are already in Sri Lanka, the MFA advised them to avoid public places where there are protests and large gatherings of people.

“Monitor the news closely and heed the instructions of the local authorities. Those in need of consular assistance may contact the Singapore Honorary Consulate-General in Colombo or the 24-hour MFA Duty Office,” said the MFA.

Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is expected to step down this week. He was forced to leave his official residence after protesters massed outside the president's office and residence.
