1 in 2 Singapore professionals prefer learning new skills over getting higher salaries: report

Invest more in staff training, bosses told.

Acquiring new skills is a priority for professionals in Singapore, with many placing more value on obtaining them than securing a pay rise or promotion, according to the latest results from the Kelly Global Workforce Index (KGWI).

When given the choice between advancing to a higher level in their organization and acquiring new skills, 51% of respondents opt for new skills. This is higher than in other countries across the region, including Hong Kong (42%), Malaysia (43%), Thailand (37%), China (35%) and Indonesia (30%).

In fact, skills are so highly valued by employees that there is even a willingness to sacrifice higher pay
and career growth for them. Over half (55%) say they would be prepared to trade-off higher pay and/or
career advancement for the chance to learn new skills at work.

“Climbing the corporate ladder is clearly important to people, but frequently not as important as developing the skills that will give them the capability and confidence to realize their long term potential,” said Mark Hall, Vice President and Country Manager at Kelly Services Singapore.

The KGWI canvassed responses from approximately 230,000 people across 31 countries including more
than 1,500 in Singapore.

The survey on the topic of Career Development looks at what employees are thinking about their careers
and what employers can do to help workers meet their career goals and stay motivated and engaged
atwork.

“Many employers will often reward staff with a promotion, but it may be more effective to invest in training and professional development that provides the skills to stay competitive in a rapidly changing economy. In this respect the recent recommendations from the Aspire Committee are very encouraging, and will make it even easier for employers in Singapore to support the continuous development of their staff,” added Hall.
