Almost half of S'poreans want to work overseas, USA amongst top choice
They are focusing on USA, Canada, the UK, and Australia.
Nearly half (49%) of Singaporeans are increasingly seeking jobs overseas for better financial rewards and global exposure, according to an Indeed survey.
Callam Pickering, APAC Senior Economist at Indeed recalled the government's call during the National Day Rally which emphasised on improving the local labour market. Pickering indicated how "upskilling, improving work benefits, and addressing the cost of living" would alleviate economic pressures and maintain a competitive market.
"In large part, this is also why international job seekers continue to see Singapore as an aspirational destination for career growth, where they can thrive in a dynamic, global business hub and benefit from a high standard of living.”
They are focusing on the USA, Canada, the UK, and Australia, looking for customer service, software engineering, and administrative roles.
"The Ministry of Manpower has consistently emphasized Singapore's commitment to attracting skilled workers globally. These efforts are reflected in various initiatives, such as enhancing work pass frameworks, promoting skills development, and ensuring a robust, inclusive work environment that appeals to both local and international professionals," the report said.
In contrast, the country continues to attract non-local job seekers. About 62% come from Malaysia, India, the Philippines, and Myanmar with administrative and warehouse roles being the top searched positions.
"These trends present both opportunities and challenges for employers. On one hand, they are able to bring new skills to their organizations yet will require them to strategically retain talent in a competitive and borderless job market," Indeed said.
