Chart of the Day: Check out how employment in the manufacturing sector crashed

Thousands of workers are being laid off.

The city-state may have experienced booming employment in its services and construction sectors, but its manufacturing sector has been going against the grain.

According to a report by Maybank Kim Eng, while the unemployment rate in 3Q15 was unchanged at 2% of workers, unemployment among locals was up to 3%.

The report added that this came even as the number of people employed rose by 16,400 during the quarter, due to contributions by the services and construction sectors.

“The services sector reported 17,000 additional employments during the quarter while the construction sector added 3,800 workers,” Maybank Kim Eng said.

Meanwhile, on the other side remains the export oriented manufacturing sector, which continues to cut down the number of employment.

Maybank Kim Eng adds that in 3Q15 alone, 4,300 workers have been laid off in the sector.
