
Chart of the Day: This graph shows Singaporeans' biggest fears about aging
Almost 60% are worried over medical costs.
According to a recent Nielsen survey, the top three concerns that Singaporean consumers fear about aging are: not having enough money for medical costs (58%), losing the ability to care for basic needs (57%) and losing physical agility (56%).
After retirement, more than three quarters of Singaporean respondents would like to focus on staying physically and mentally fit (77%) and spending time with their family (63%) and eating healthy (44%).

When asked if the respondents became too old to care for themselves and cannot live alone, what would be their most realistic living arrangements -; nearly two in five respondents in Singapore say that they plan to live at home with their spouse (38%) while 17 percent said that they will stay with their children, live in an assisted living facility (17%) or in a nursing home (16%). In other markets in Southeast Asia, more people plan to live with their children.
Advertising messaging is not resonating among more than half respondents in Singapore (55%) who say they don’t see ads that reflect older consumers. Substantial percentages of Singaporean respondents also find it difficult to navigate assistance from service-oriented industries like finance (46%), housing (45%), meal-delivery providers (42%), transportation (41%) and medical insurance (38%).
On the product front, more work is necessary to cater to seniors who often have special nutritional needs or dexterity limitations or desire smaller-sized food portion packaging. Almost half of respondents in Singapore say they cannot find foods that meet special nutritional diets (47%), more than four in 10 (45%) say it is difficult to find product labels that are easy to read and 41 percent have trouble locating packages that are easy to open.
