Chart of the Day: Manufacturing sector headcounts dropped by 3,000 in 2019

Employment figures fell in tandem with the sector’s GDP.

This chart from the Ministry of Manpower reveals that the total employment in the manufacturing sector recorded its sixth consecutive cutback of 3,000 in 2019, steeper than the 2,400 drop in 2018, based on preliminary data.

This reflected declines in the manufacturing GDP, which declined further by 2.1% YoY and reversed to a 7.3% QoQ saa contraction during the quarter.

In Q4, the total employment in the sector grew by 700, slower than 1,000 in the previous quarter, but reversing a fall of 2,000 in Q4 2018.

Overall, total employment grew by 55,200 for the whole year, up from the 38,300 rise in the previous year.
