Chart of the Day: Temporary layoffs in Q3 jumped to 170

The number of employees on a short work-week fell from 970 to 660.

This chart from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) reveals that the number of employees who were temporarily laid off jumped from 10 in Q2 to 170 in Q3. In contrast, those who were placed on short work-week fell from 970 to 660.

In total, the number of employees in either status declined from 970 in Q2 to 830 in Q3 of 2019 after three consecutive quarters of increase.

The manufacturing sector took up almost half or 48% of all employees placed on short work-week or temporary layoff, followed by Services (36%) and Construction (14%). By occupation, over four in five were production & related workers (43%).
