Hospitality, recreation sectors top jobseeker's list

Even if jobseekers view jobs here not offering long-term security and competitive compensation package.

Jobseekers rank Singapore’s hospitality and recreational industries as the top industries that attract them for a future career, according to the Randstad Award survey.

The survey of 4000 employees in Singapore found 36% of respondents viewed the hospitality and recreational sector as having interesting job content, 33% believed it had a pleasant working atmosphere and 19% believed it offered good training.

The Randstad Award survey is the world’s largest employer branding study, which assesses workers’ views on the most attractive industries and companies to work for.

Randstad Asia Pacific Managing Director, Ms Deb Loveridge, said: “These findings bode well for Singapore’s service sector, particularly the hospitality sector, which is seeking to attract friendly, service-orientated individuals who shine in customer service.

“People who love travelling are often attracted to the hospitality and recreational industries. These sectors provide very solid training and development opportunities, and create exciting career paths. People can start their hospitality career in a marketing role, then move into customer service, ending up in regional business development. The industry attracts those who are passionate about people, service and entertainment,” Ms Loveridge said.

Jobs in the hospitality and recreational industries can be as wide ranging as event planning, hotel management, sales consulting, services and housekeeping, through to marketing, human resources, accounting, IT and corporate services.

“Hospitality companies that invest in employer branding and position themselves as an employer of choice will recruit talented individuals committed to helping grow their business,” Ms Loveridge said.

“Regardless of their industry, in this tight labour market all companies need to look at their full employee value proposition and offer employees a complete package, including benefits and entitlements such as financial reward, job security, career progression, work/life balance, and above all be a company that people are proud to work for,” she said.

Respondents rated the engineering, construction and energy sector the highest (19%) for long-term job security, while the banking and financial services sector was most competitive (21%) for salary and employee benefits.
