Seriously, Singapore labour is still in 'fortunate position': analyst
Unemployment rate still low at 1.9%.
According to Michael Smith, Randstad Country Director – Singapore, rmployees in Singapore are in a fortunate position. Even with the moderate growth of employment creation in the first quarter of 2013, unemployment still remains low at 1.9 per cent.
Here's more from his comments:
“This slowed creation of jobs is an indication that businesses‟ efforts to raise productivity are paying off. With increased productivity in the workplace and a focus on careerdevelopment and up skilling for current employees, employers might see a reduction in the urgency of adding more employees to their organisation.
“Nevertheless, it is still important for employers to consider new hires who are able to contribute and further accelerate productivity,” says Mr Smith.
On the declining layoffs, Smith said, “Even with the declining layoffs in the past few months, it still remains crucial that jobseekers and current employees do not get complacent and continue to update their skills and qualifications. This will not only add value to their workplace, but will also ensure that they remain relevant in today‟s tight labour market.”
