Singapore learners’s demand growing in AI skills and STEM education: study
AI and machine learning developments are in demand for learners.
With about 900,000 Singaporean learners on Coursera, their strengths are mostly in business skills such as finance (94%), human resources (87%), sales (90%), marketing (93%), and entrepreneurship (88%).
In its study, Coursera said “Singaporean learners are competitive across the board
in technology skills but deliver cutting-edge results in theoretical computer science (88%), computer programming (81%), web development (99%), and databases (87%).”
Singaporeans are also investing in business skills like fintech (2.05x), blockchain (1.8x), and investment management (1.38x) and AI-related data science skills like computer vision (1.07x), applied machine learning (1.07x), and deep learning (1.05x).
Coursera noted that AI skills are in demand as Generative AI and Machine Learning developments are anticipated to reshape the global economy in unprecedented ways.
“Trending AI skills amongst learners in Singapore include deep learning, applied machine learning, artificial neural networks, python programming and data structures,” said Coursera.
Bridging the STEM gap in gender
Coursera also found in its study that online learning will bridge the gap in how women learn as women strive for in-demand careers.
“This trend is helping to create a more inclusive workforce, with the share of certificate enrollments for women in Singapore increasing from 30% in 2019 to 39% in 2022.
Its study also showed that women learners in Singapore are well-rounded with cutting-edge skill proficiency across the three domains – Business (92%), Technology (80%) and Data Science (77%).
