Singapore leads APAC in sustainable construction and manufacturing
SG is the only APAC country to achieve two UN sustainability goals.
A research report released by Autodesk revealed that Singapore is the only country in the Asia Pacific to lead in construction and manufacturing sustainability.
The report, titled "Enabling a Sustainable Future through Digitalisation: Trends driving the Design & Manufacturing and Architecture, Engineering, and Construction Industries in APAC 1," was done in collaboration with Frost & Sullivan. It surveyed companies across architecture, engineering, construction, design, and manufacturing (AEC and D&M) industries to determine current factors driving sustainability across APAC.
Out of the nine participating countries, Singapore led as the only country to achieve two of the five United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that are impacted by the AEC and D&M sectors. These goals were "Affordable and Clean Energy" and
"Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure." The country is also close to achieving a third goal, "Sustainable Cities and Communities."
Also included in the study were India, Japan, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
Singapore contributes around 0.1% to global carbon emissions, and ranks at 27 out of 142 countries in terms of emissions per capita. This outpaces Malaysia, India, and the Philippines, with buildings making up more than 20% of the nation’s carbon emissions.
“As a dense, urban nation, Singapore has had to overcome great odds to emerge as a front-runner in achieving these three SDGs. A combination of policy and capacity-building initiatives has enabled its AEC and D&M sectors to make substantial headways towards a net-zero future, without compromising economic and business growth. Singapore’s efforts can serve as an example for APAC countries struggling to suppress the increase of GHG emissions driven by high economic growth,” said Haresh Khoobchandani, Vice President, APAC, Autodesk.
