Sungei Kadut to pioneer Singapore's manufacturing industry: Chan Chun Sing

The MTI minister plans to make the area more open to new industries and R&D centres.

Sungei Kadut is set for a major rejuvenation to reclaim its position as a pioneering estate of the manufacturing industry, according to a speech by the Minister of Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing.

“We will redevelop Sungei Kadut to support the transformation of existing industries, many of which are already in Sungei Kadut. Today, Sungei Kadut is home to the timber, furniture, construction, and waste recycling industries. But they are dispersed, and not optimally laid out,” Chan said.

He also noted that Sungei Kadut once achieved this position about 50-60 years ago. He aims to have Sungei Kadut to pioneer the growth of new industries as well, starting with setting aside 18 ha of land for Phase 1 of the Agri-Food innovation Park (AFIP) for the agri-tech sector, aiming to grab a larger share of the US$5t global industry

“[The agri-tech sector] is growing in terms of the demand for quality and safety, and this is where Singapore's trusted brand is so important for us. So the Agri Food Innovation Park will house best-in-class companies and R&D centres across the entire agri-tech value chain to encourage cooperation and capture synergies,” Chan stated.

In addition, he also plans to have JTC add more specialised multi-user developments with shared facilities and services in the area, that would minimise business costs. He also cited JTC’s partnership with the Singapore Cranes Association to provide a shared open yard for the testing of heavy and tall machinery in TimMac.

MTI has also reserved 200 ha of land in Sungei Kadut that will be occupied by new industries and uses.

Furthermore, Sungei Kadut is set to “have a much larger green area”, quadrupling the green cover from the current 10% to 40% with parks, green roofs and trees. The North-South and Downtown MRT lines will also link Sungei Kadut to the national MRT network by 2030s.
